Ajayan group got involved in graphene research, few years after the discovery of graphene. This continued with the inclusion of other 2D materials, in particular Boron Nitride (BN) and Transition Metal dichalcogenides (TMD). Early pioneering work in the vapor phase synthesis of BN and TMDs came from the group. In addition, the group was also responsible for breakthrough research in hybrid 2D structures including the creation and characterization of artificially stacked 2D heterostructures and lateral 2D heterojunctions. The group remains actively involved in the synthesis and application of 2D materials and their heterostructures.
